Alcohol can be one of the hardest and most dangerous of drugs to detox from. The withdrawal can be life-threatening. Because alcohol withdrawal symptoms can rapidly worsen, it’s important to seek medical attention even if symptoms are seemingly mild. At Banyan Detox we can help ensure the safest environment for alcohol detox.
What is Alcohol Dependence?
If someone finds it difficult to enjoy life or relax without having a drink, it’s possible they have become dependent on alcohol. An alcohol dependent person may worry about where the next drink is coming from, or find he/she has a compulsive need to drink, and can’t stop drinking once started. They might have feelings of anxiety or suicidal feelings due to the neurotransmitters in their brain being interfered with. He/she might show signs of withdrawal such as shaking, or sweating, which stop once alcohol is drank.
People who drink heavily tend to keep increasing the amount they drink because they develop a tolerance to alcohol. Tolerance is a physiological response we have to any drug: the more you consume, the more you need to consume to have the same effect. Like many other drugs, alcohol can be both physically and psychologically addictive.
What is Alcohol Withdrawal Like?
Alcohol withdrawal symptoms can begin as early as two hours after the last drink, persist for weeks, and range from mild anxiety and shakiness to severe complications, such as seizures and delirium tremens (also called DTs). The death rate from DTs — which are characterized by confusion, rapid heartbeat, and fever — is estimated to range from 1% to 5%. This is why we here at Banyan Detox believe it is so important to detox in a safe facility.
